This is my entry for the Secret 7" competition to design a vinyl cover for the new Florence + the Machine single. The song is 'Only If For A Night' and is being released in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust.
The premise is that artists and creatives are being invited to create a 7" artwork, based on the song; the project will culminate in 700 unique vinyl sleeves being displayed at the Idea Generation Gallery in London in the lead up to Record Store Day on 21st April 2012. On that day, each of the vinyls will be available to purchase with the proceeds going to Teenage Cancer Trust.
Florence herself is going to choose her 45 favourites to be exhibited, and they will be sold as the official singles on the day. Fingers crossed!
My painting takes inspiration from Frida Kahlo's 'The Dream' (1932) and is a literal interpretation of the dream-visions and imagery in the song- Joan of Arc, the graveyard etc. As in a vivid dream, recognisable yet disparate images are brought together here to disorientating effect. The awkward perspective and exaggerated colours reflect the dream-state and add to the sense of discomfort.
An homage to one of my favourite bands and their song 'Shadows' which I think is simply quality in its shoe-gazey introspection. The important thing was to give the lyrics the space on the page that they deserve, whilst keeping the portraits the main focus pictorially. It's not every day a song or - in this case - an entire album comes along and really grabs you. My initial sketches were drawn from various music videos including, but not limited to Elephants, Burgundy and Billie Holiday. The videos made for their Rough Trade Sessions series are beautifully filmed and an excellent insight into the band's live performance and aesthetic.
This A1-sized drawing in ink started life as a collage and quickly evolved into one of my more detailed and painstaking artworks to date. It grew out of the many images the media reported by the hour and a particularly insightful article written by Seumas Milne for the Guardian - www.Guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/aug/10/riots-reflect-society-run-greed-looting?INTCMP=SRCH An 'illustration' in the true sense of the word, it keeps its collage-feel; mixing typography, portraiture and lots of figurative work. Exhibited at The Brick Lane Gallery 'State of Grace' show 28th September - 9th October.
